Famous for the discovery of the ancient Etruscan city of Spina, brought to light during major land reclamation works in the 20th century, Comacchio has much older origins. Already in the 8th century it was an important trading hub: its inhabitants, the “Comaclenses", transported and sold salt, oil, and oriental spices along the Po River and its tributaries, making the town a strategic link between inland areas and the Upper Adriatic ports. Fishing, lagoon farming, and salt production have deeply shaped the identity of the territory, influencing its wealth and its often complex relations, especially with nearby Venice.
After a long period under Este rule and later under the Papal States, Comacchio experienced important economic, social, and cultural development. In these centuries, the town took on the urban layout that still characterises it today, remaining almost unchanged until the mid-20th century.
