The Po Delta Park, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, is the largest regional park in Emilia-Romagna, encompassing more than 60,000 hectares of protected natural landscapes. It is an extraordinary territory where water and land create a mosaic of unique environments: thermophilic woodlands, freshwater wetlands, brackish lagoons, salt pans and rice fields, river sandbanks, sandy beaches, coastal dunes, and back-dune habitats. A true treasure chest of biodiversity in the heart of northern Italy.
With more than 300 bird species recorded over recent decades, including over 150 breeding species and more than 180 wintering species, the Po Delta is Italy’s most important birdwatching area and one of the most significant in Europe. Its strategic location along the major north-south and east-west migratory flyways, between the western Mediterranean and the Black Sea, makes it an ideal habitat for observing a remarkable variety of waterbirds.
The best time for birdwatching in the Po Delta coincides with the spring and autumn migration periods, from late February to mid-April and from mid-July to mid-October, when the highest number of species can be observed. The area hosts breeding populations of 9 species of gulls and terns—an exceptional case in Europe—and all 14 European species of Ciconiiformes are present here, with 13 breeding within the Delta. Flamingos, Spoonbills, Ospreys, waterfowl, and waders are also among the many species that can be observed.
